Bistro Senzill, Capdepera

2019, Aug 19th

Chef Andreu Genestra serves dishes based on local produce in a rural setting near Capdepera.

Mallorcan chef Andreu Genestra has two restaurants at the Hotel Predi Son Jaumell, in the countryside outside the northeast-Mallorcan town of Capdepera. The restaurant in his name has one Michelin star but, if your budget won’t stretch to Michelin-star dining, his Bistro Senzill at the same hotel offers an opportunity to eat Andreu’s cuisine at a more accessible price, in a less formal ambience.

Bistro Senzill’s tables are on the attractive terrace near the hotel’s swimming-pool area and are covered by a shaded wisteria-clad pergola. These tables aren’t too close together, so feel intimate. Some larger round tables are shaded by parasols (with built-in lights at night). The space also has an outdoor kitchen, where you can see the chefs working.

Bistro Senzill is open for lunch and dinner, with some light dishes also available during the intervening period. As we studied the menu, maître d’ David Serrano showed us the fresh fish and beef that were additional to the menu.

The à la carte menu is in sections: Moment Senzill dishes include a truffled club sandwich and the Senzill hamburger – both served with home-made chips (and both priced at 14€). This section also includes sharing plates and we chose the sea bass ceviche (15€) as our starter, which was very good. Salads are available in the Green Senzill section.

We chose our main-course dishes from Grill and Fire: of the ten fish or meat plates here, eight are under 20 €. I had beef fillet skewers (two) with peanut chimichurri sauce (24 €); my companion chose crispy duck with aubergine and honey (17 €), which he said was “full of flavour and delicious.”

Desserts include Andreu Genestra’s signature ‘The Flowerpot’ (14 €) and a cheese board (14 €). All other desserts are 8 € each. We had a deconstructed version of banoffee pie and ‘Tropical’ – a refreshing concoction of mango, coconut, and pineapple.

Bistro Senzill offers a very good choice of gluten-free dishes (marked as such), with vegan and vegetarian dishes marked on the menu.

Wines include Andreu Genestra’s own and some wines on the list are available by the glass. Book your table at Bistro Senzill in advance.
