L’Atrio by Sascha, Artà

Hotspot for steak fans in the North East

This restaurant is one of two in Artà owned by German chef Sascha – and a hotspot for steak fans.

Owner/chef Sascha initially had his restaurant Na Creu in a side street in Artà. He moved to the more prominent location of C/ Ciutat, where he first took over Restaurant Faro, in the pedestrianised area of this pleasant town in northeast Mallorca. He later acquired the former pizzeria L’Atrio, adding ‘by Sascha’ to its name.

L’Atrio by Sascha is a very short walk from street parking and is adjacent to the town’s Guardia Civil headquarters. The restaurant has a cosy ambience with intimate lighting over each table and an attractive décor which incorporates natural materials and an interesting bar fascia made from the panels of old wooden wine and champagne boxes.

The menu is à la carte, with a board of daily specials also offered. Dishes are shown in Spanish, English, and German, and the menu offers starters, salads, fresh fish, pasta, ‘grill room’, wok dishes, and desserts.

Steak fans will find quality Black Angus beef: rib-eye (280 g for 24 €) and rump (280 g for 23 €) steaks. Accompaniments include a choice of potatoes (including rosti and oven-baked with Quark) and either salad or sautéed vegetables. A choice of herb butter or a tasty pepper sauce is included in the price.

Other meats include beef cheeks, lamb chops, duck leg, and Iberian pork.

Vegetarian options are not plentiful but there’s a veggie version of the Asian-style wok dishes, a starter of gratinated goat’s cheese salad, and a main-course salad on the menu.

Desserts (the most expensive is 6,50 €) are home-made and include a chocolate coulant with a lovely oozing centre, served with ice cream.

Portion sizes are generous, as you’d expect in a restaurant that’s popular with local German residents and holidaymakers. Service is friendly and professional and on the various occasions I’ve eaten here, it’s been obvious that quite a lot of the other diners were regular customers of L’Atrio by Sascha in Artà.

NOTE: Extensive work is currently underway on renovating the pedestrianised area opposite the restaurant. Due to the resulting noise during the daytime, L’Atrio by Sascha is serving dinner only until the end of April – when the work should be complete and lunch service will resume.
