MOSS, Palma

The new restaurant of Meliá Palma Marina

2018, Nov 05th

The former Meliá Palas Atenea is now known as the Meliá Palma Marina Hotel and, in giving the hotel a brand-new look and facilities, Meliá opened the hotel’s ground-floor all-day eatery, Moss.

Moss has its own entrance from the street so there’s no need to walk through the hotel foyer. The strapline ‘Food for Nature’ at the entrance tells you what to expect: the cuisine is healthy, balanced, and based on fresh local produce – and 75 per cent of the products used are vegetable-based. Moss is a flexitarian restaurant, meaning vegetarians will find plenty of choice – but you’ll find a few meat and fish dishes too.

Moss is spacious, with attractive contemporary décor. A few outside tables are available roadside at the front but, in my opinion, eating indoors here has more appeal.

The three-course menú del día lunch is good value at 15 €, with a choice of dishes. On the day of my last visit, the main courses included grilled vegetables, stroganoff with basmati rice, and grilled hake with ‘panadera’ potato. The set lunch menu is available from 12:30 to 16:00 h. On the à la carte menu, starters included a tasty hummus trio accompanied by wholemeal crackers; main courses included five different vegetarian salad bowls to which you can – for a small supplementary price – add roast free-range chicken, marinated salmon, or poached free-range egg. The tarts on the dessert menu are all made without processed sugar, eggs, flour, or lactose. Moss also offers some healthy drinks, including smoothies and, my recommendation, the home-made lemonade.

If you want to come earlier in the day, there’s a separate breakfast menu. Over the first weekend of each month, in conjunction with the Balearic Coeliac Society, Moss offers a 100 % gluten-free brunch from 11:30 – 15:30 h for 28 €. Book by email at least 24 hours in advance for a 10 % discount on the brunch price.
