The Sound of Spain

Sunshine, sangria and siesta; just a few of the words that sum up our glorious life in Spain. But what about its classical music and which pieces immediately spring to mind? Can even  just a few bars of music evoke the character and identity of a nation?

Two of Mallorca’s leading cultural societies, The Arts Society Mallorca and the Academia 1830 – an acclaimed local orchestra – are joining forces for the first time on Friday 29 November to present a showpiece event that will provide a lively look at Spain’s musical heritage.

This especially designed collaboration at the historic Sa Nostra Cultural Centre in Palma will consist of a talk by Oriol Palau, professor at the Conservatori Professional de Música in Palma and cello soloist, with musical accompaniment by Valentin Moldovan, a sought after professional pianist.

Through their music and words they will investigate the identity of Spain as expressed in its music and how music characterises a nation. They will explain what inspiration Spain has given to the world’s music and, interestingly, why so much of what we regard as Spanish music was not actually written by Spaniards.
